Pongour Waterfall - What Makes You See a Different Dalat

Pongour waterfalls is also named the best waterfalls in Vietnam, located in Tan Hoi Commune, Duc Trong district, 50 kilometers to the south of centre of Dalat city on Highway 2. There is not too much water in the falls currently due to the hydropower but with large terraces, it is still a unique setting. The valley at the downstream of the falls is also a suitable site for camping and relaxation.

Pongour waterfalls are about 50 meters high, and divided into 7-story waterfall, looks like the hair of a beautiful woman from distance. The big rocks on the falls make white foam water.


The special beauty of the waterfall lies in the system of flat stone steps, lining, though not in any order yet, but does “rip” water into hundreds of small stream, forming majestic white foam mats of water. Below the waterfall is an immense peaceful lake with many undulating rock in the middle of the water.


Pongour waterfall is associated with the heroic legends of ethnic K'ho. Legend has it that, in the ancient time, the land was ruled by a beautiful K'ho female chieftain named Kanai. She conquered the beasts and created favourable conditions for the people. She has four large rhinos which always obeyed her. They moved mountains, separated streams, created cultivated areas and protected villagers.


In a full moon day in January, she passed away. Four rhinos were around her side, did not eat until death. Not long after that, in her resting place imposing a beautiful waterfalls. Kanai’s hair became the white cool water while the great mossy green rocks served as a base for the waterfall are the horns of rhinos. It is a symbol of eternal bond between human and nature.
